Planting a New Kind of Teacher: The Cultures and Communities/MPS Experiment

Abstract

In this article a university professor and two Milwaukee Public School teachers describe a unique experiment in K-16 collaboration. The public school "Teachers-inResidence" undertake a two-year stint at a university program dedicated to mainstreaming multiculturalism in undergraduate education, and help create courses for future urban educators. University liberal arts and art faculty work closely with the teachers, improving teacher preparation across the disciplines and creating connections to public schools, at the same time providing the Teachers-in-Residence with challenging opportunities for professional growth.
