Maintaining a Culture of Engagement: Challenges and Opportunities in an Evolving Institution

Abstract

This article considers the challenges and opportunities facing one university whose primary mission has, since its inception, encouraged faculty engagement and outreach. Changing student and f acuity populations, accreditation standards for professional schools, and the realities of balancing teaching, scholarship, and service, create new challenges and opportunities for continuing to integrate engagement and scholarship. In order to maintain a culture of engagement, outreach and engagement must be included in an integrated concept of faculty roles.
