Pasteur's quadrant is offered as an idea for escaping from the dysfunctional dichotomy of "applied" vs. "basic" research and the stigma that each attaches to the other. By focusing on relevant researchresearch that is inspired by the needs of the community or society, but draws on or creates appropriate theoryuniversities may be able to alter the research agenda of faculty so that the total contribution of university research to the community is significantly greater.Downloads
