Disability Services: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Most metropolitan universities have been covered by federal disability legislation (Section 504) since 1977. Many institutions ignored or incompletely mmet their responsibilities. With the recent passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), colleges must take the lead to plan for the inclusion and full participation of students with disabilities. An approach must be developed that meets the letter and the spirit of the law; one that not ' only provides for access, but for opportunity.
