Community Service at Urban Public Institutions: A Report on Conditions and Activities

Abstract

This article describes the results of a survey conducted by the Office of Urban and Metropolitan Programs, jointly established by AASCU and NASULGC. The survey obtained information regarding community service activities and pertinent conditions from 186 of the 280 member institutions that identify themselves as either "urban 11 or "metropolitan. 11 The results indicate substantial community service at almost all of the institutions, identify principal areas of activity, as well as barriers to meeting this aspect of institutional mission, and suggest strategies to leverage resources and expand service capability.
