Higher Education and the Schools: A Call to Action and Strategy for Change

Abstract

The author traces the recent history of school/ college partnerships, and argues that todays needs demand a very different form of collaboration: one that promotes "K-16" reform. Reform activity focused only on K-12 will not succeed because the two systems are so intertwined that substantial change in one cannot occur without changes in the other. Based on experiences with six "Community Compacts" cities, the AAHE Education Trust is urging the creation of local "K-16 Councils" in metropolitan areas, bringing together leaders from higher education, K-12, and the broader community.
