A Catalyst for Economic Development

With their concentrations of scientific talent and other resources, metropolitan universities can be significant catalysts for economic development in their communities. In order for metropolitan universities to make an impact, however, they must be very selective, building upon traditional or emerging program strengths that are consistent with the character and needs of the local or regional economy. This article describes strategies, ranging from internal policy making to creating forums for industry-university ties, for preparing a metropolitan university for this role.Downloads
